NASHVILLE -- Jeff Skinner is providing a big offensive boost for the Carolina Hurricanes. Skinner got his first career hat trick to lead the Hurricanes to a 5-2 victory over the Nashville Predators on Thursday night. He has five goals in his past two games. Justin Faulk and Riley Nash also scored for Carolina, winners of its past two. Mike Fisher and Viktor Stalberg scored for Nashville, which completed a four-game homestand 0-3-1. Faulk scored the games first goal just 23 seconds after the opening faceoff with a wrist shot from the right faceoff dot that beat Nashville goaltender Marek Mazanec between the pads. "Any time you can establish good play or good momentum early in the game, let alone a goal, is always huge," Faulk said. "You dont go into the game expecting to score on your first shift or your first shot on net, but obviously when you do that it kind of gives your team a little bit of a boost." Nashville tied it at 50 seconds of the second on Fishers goal. Defenceman Victor Bartley fired a slap shot toward the Carolina net from the left point. Standing just to the left of the slot, Fisher tipped the puck over the shoulder of Carolina goaltender Justin Peters. Bartleys assist was his first point of the season. "Its been a long time since I had a point so that was definitely nice to get," Bartley said. "Fisher did a great job getting on the net, and (Seth) Jones made a nice pass to me. We had some traffic and good things happened." Less than two minutes later, Stalberg gave Nashville the lead at 2:41. Coming down the right side on a 2-on-1 break with Nick Spaling, Stalbergs initial shot was turned aside by Peters, but he skated around the goal and swatted it into the net with a backhand for his third goal of the season. Skinner evened the game at 2 at 6:11 of the second on a wrist shot from the right circle low to Mazanecs glove side. Carolina regained the lead at 11:51 of the second. Just out of the penalty box, Ron Hainsey intercepted a clearing attempt by Nashvilles Roman Josi leading to a 3-on-1 break for the Hurricanes. Hainsey found Patrick Dwyer, who made a nice pass to Nash for his second of the season. "That third goal, it was just a blatant turnover," Nashville coach Barry Trotz said. "That changed the whole game right there. It got them excited and it got us on our heels again." Nashs score snapped a 19-game goal-scoring drought. Skinners second goal came on the power play at 19:08 of the second when he ripped a slap shot from above the circle by Mazanec. "The PP has sort of been struggling throughout the year, but I think the last couple of games we have sort of felt good about that," Skinner said. "Its always nice to get goals late in the periods, coming into the locker room with that good feeling." Carter Hutton replaced Mazanec in the Nashville goal at the start of the third period. Mazanec, who was named the NHLs Rookie of the Month for November, stopped just nine of the 13 shots he faced in 40 minutes. Skinner completed the hat trick at 17:53 of the third with an empty-net goal. "Hes shooting the puck," Carolina coach Kirk Muller said. "Hes a goal scorer when he shoots the puck. He can score when he gets those opportunities, so hes working for it." Carolinas Patrick Dwyer, Mike Komisarek, and Dryason Bowman all left the game with injuries and did not return. Notes: Predators goaltender Pekka Rinne underwent an MRI on Thursday, and the results were improved according to general manager David Poile. Rinne will continue limited physical activity for the next two weeks and, if all goes well, will be able to advance to more strenuous conditioning later in December. "In a nutshell, the doctor is happy with the progress," Poile said. "What he is recommending is two more weeks basically of rehab if you will. December 20th is sort of a target date to hopefully get him into more strenuous activity leading back to playing." ... Nashville D Shea Weber missed his third straight game with an eye injury. The team announced that he would practice with the team Friday and return to the lineup as early as Saturday in Washington. ... Mazanec has started Nashvilles past 12 games. Carolina C Eric Staal has points in three straight games. ... The Hurricanes previous win in Nashville came Dec. 3, 2002. Five years ago, Nestor and Zimonjic beat the American twins to win the title. But the Bryans, the worlds top-ranked team, needed 74 minutes to earn the victory Saturday as both Nestor and Zimonjic lost serve in the second set.It would be easy enough to drop Peyton Manning in as the number one quarterback this year and worry about slotting the rest after that, but that doesnt have to be automatic either. Yes, Manning is coming off a career-best season, one for the ages, but after three consecutive seasons with more than 5,000 yards passing, Drew Brees can make a reasonable claim for top spot too. No matter which one is on top -- and I have Brees -- they are a cut above the rest at the position. The way that passing has evolved in the NFL, there are now lots of quarterbacks who can throw for 4,000 yards and 25 touchdowns -- there were eight last season -- but Manning and Brees were the only ones north of 5,000 yards and 35 touchdowns, so consider them Tier One. After that, Matthew Stafford and Aaron Rodgers are accomplished passers. Over the past three seasons, Stafford ranks second (behind only Brees) with 14,655 passing yards and that gives him a slight edge on Rodgers, who ranks second in that time (again behind Brees) with 101 touchdown passes. Those are still elite options but, after that, the warts start to become a little more apparent, even among quality options. Colin Kaepernick and Cam Newton are brilliant runners and while thats a potential fantasy goldmine for yardage and touchdowns, it also presents a risk of injury. Working in Kaepernicks favour is that he has an improved receiving corps, with a healthy Michael Crabtree and newcomers Stevie Johnson joining Anquan Boldin and tight end Vernon Davis, Kaepernick doesnt lack weapons. Newton, on the other hand, requires a leap of faith, because his supporting cast is suspect, at best. Tight end Greg Olsen is a good one, but Newtons No. 1 wideout appears to be Jerricho Cotchery, a 32-year-old who had a nice season (46 REC, 602 YDS, 10 TD) last year, as Pittsburghs number three receiver, but he has one 1,000-yard receiving season in his career and last year was the only time in Cotcherys career that hes had more than half a dozen touchdowns in a year. On the other side, the Panthers have rookie Kelvin Benjamin, a 6-foot-5, 240-pounder who had a big year (54 REC, 1011 YDS, 15 TD) at Florida State, but its asking a lot to expect thee 28th pick in the draft to immediately make an impact.dddddddddddd. In any case, these are some challenges that Newton faces as he tries to match the production of his first three seasons. They arent the only accomplished running quarterbacks. Further down the draft list, Robert Griffin III -- who ought to benefit from the addition of wide receiver DeSean Jackson -- and Russell Wilson, maybe with a healthy Percy Harvin at his disposal, have appeal as well. After a breakout performance last season, during which he threw for 27 touchdowns and only two interceptions in 13 games (10 starts), Nick Foles has exciting potential, if not the longest track record in the league. Andrew Luck has the pedigree, as a first overall pick, and has thrown for more than 8,000 yards with 46 touchdowns in his first two seasons. Its tempting to go for that potential. For more established options, maybe look to Atlantas Matt Ryan, who is likely to bounce back with a healthy Julio Jones in the lineup and Tom Brady has to be considered. Even though his passing touchdowns declined last year, to 25 his lowest since 2006, Brady has thrown for more than 4,300 yards in four of the past five seasons and the Patriots offence is still focused on him. Beyond that top dozen, there are proven veterans, like Andy Dalton, Tony Romo, Philip Rivers and Ben Roethlisberger, all of whom have been able to put up big numbers, just not with the same kind of consistency. Romo has, in fact, been pretty consistent in his production but, coming off back surgery, hes perhaps a little riskier than in previous years. Among the younger quarterbacks looking for a breakthrough, maybe Ryan Tannehill, Geno Smith or E.J. Manuel are ready to move up, but they are still second-stringers, at best, for fantasy purposes. As for rookies Johnny Manziel, Blake Bortles or Teddy Bridgewater, keep an eye on them and be prepared to work the waiver wire, but none of the three appear to be set for big production right off the start.
